She recounts a case of a Brazilian-born wife of a man who had died from cancer.  e woman wanted custody of two cherished stepdaughters with whom she had forged a close bond. Although the biological mother had been out of her daughters’ lives for years, and for reasons that were questionable, she tried to assert custody. A er a full trial, Harney prevailed. In addition to domestic relations, Harney focuses her practice in the areas of criminal defense and civil litigation.
In addition to its  ve partners, it has the help of its newest associate, Ashton Pouliot, a 2012 graduate of the University of Massachusetts School of Law. Pouliot, a native of Cape Cod, joined the  rm in 2015 a er  nishing a clerkship in the Barnstable Probate and Family Court.
Carter DeYoung rounds out its arsenal with Jason Rawlins, who acts in an “of counsel” capacity in the areas of immigration and bankruptcy. Rawlins, a former intern at the  rm, is now operating a law o ce in Bridgewater and is also associate town counsel to the city of Bridgewater. Lastly, Russell Wilkins, one of the original founders, remains an important resource as he continues to act of counsel.
Shaping A Vision Forward
In 2016, Carter DeYoung will continue its e orts to expand the reach of the  rm. Its plans include courting clients on the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, as well as “beyond the bridge” to Plymouth and Bristol counties. “We historically have had a large referral base from other lawyers. Our position has forever been it’s always a one-time referral.  ere’s never any concern that we’ll keep their clients,” adds Carter.
