“Having various view points enhances your understanding of a problem and can also make you much more efficient, which ultimately makes it less expensive for the client.”
“We have an outstanding team,” adds Carter. In addition to its namesakes, Carter DeYoung is comprised of three other partners and an associate, each of whom was chosen as a result of a keen ability to see the types of issues likely to be affecting the Cape region and thereby the direction of the firm.
Notwithstanding the Cape’s small geographic footprint, the legal issues here cast as long of a shadow as those in a big city. The seasonality of much of the workforce coupled with
the extraordinarily high cost of living in a resort community creates a dichotomy between those who live here on a year round basis and those who see the Cape as an iconic vacation destination. The resulting fragility of the population is surprising to those in other parts of the state. A recent HBO special entitled, “Heroin: Cape Cod, USA” is a poignant testament to this fact.
With its criminal defense practice burgeoning, the firm decided it needed another attorney. Now partner, Seth Roman, who joined the firm in 2004, was their choice. An alumnus of Boston College, Roman was a former attorney with the United
States Department of Justice in Philadelphia. Roman left a position as an assistant district attorney for the Cape and Islands to join the firm. “The Cape ‘has it all,’ drugs, DUI, domestic violence, as well as white-collar crimes like the bookkeeper charged with embezzlement,” reflects Roman. An experienced trial attorney, Roman handles not only criminal cases but also civil, estate and personal injury litigation.
At the same time Roman came aboard, the firm made a decision to expand the scope of its practice to include wills, trusts, estate planning and litigation. Carter DeYoung recognized the duality of the Cape, and that the new millennium would bring an increasing number of baby boomers for retirement.
A search ensued and uncovered a woman who seemed tailor made for the job, Cindy Nuzzolo. Nuzzolo, now a partner, had a background that would be hard to match in any city. In addition to a Juris Doctor from Franklin Pierce Law Center, she holds an LL.M. in taxation, as well as a master’s in intellectual property law. Her former career as an asset manager for high net worth clients, which included a Series 7 license to trade stocks, sealed the deal. “A lack of estate planning burdens the ones you love during your life and possibly after your death, and in cases of litigation, many people truly do not understand this,” says Nuzzolo. “Having an attorney who has a background as a financial planner is an advantage.”
Five years later, as their growth strategy came to fruition, Carter DeYoung once again added to its ranks with now partner, Holly Harney. Harney, a graduate of New England School of Law was also an assistant district attorney of the Cape and Islands for eight years before joining the firm. “We have a diverse population on the
