and love to watch basketball, football, baseball or boxing. I also just started taking flying lessons which is something I have always wanted to do, but probably too scared to actually try.
My job is 24/7 though, which suits me fine as I always say that I strive in stressful situations. However, I will be the first to recog- nize that family law is not for everyone. I don’t expect or encour- age the same 24/7 mentality from other attorneys and staff here. We work hard, but in an emotionally charged area of law such as ours, it’s important for them to be able to step away and recharge. Caring about our clients is key to success, and if you can’t achieve some balance, you run the risk of losing your compassion and your enthusiasm. I always state to everyone in our office who is willing to listen that the moment you stop caring about clients is the moment you stop doing a good job.
What advice do you have for attorneys new to the field?
Do not get involved in family law unless you are prepared to be able to litigate in a highly stressful environment. When I started practicing family law, Randy Kessler reminded me that family law attorneys see good people, oftentimes behaving their worst. While criminal attorneys see bad people, behaving their best. As such, you must be able to thrive in highly emotional and high conflict situations.
What drives you?
Every day is different here, and I like it that way. After all this time, I’m excited about coming to work each day. I’m engaged and committed at all times not only to my clients, but also to making the family law bar better.
