Simmons Hanly Conroy Volunteer Attorneys Help to Expunge or Seal Records at Legal Aid Expungement Day

December 1, 2025

ALTON, IL—Simmons Hanly Conroy joined forces with Land of Lincoln Legal Aid, Springfield Urban League, and other local agencies for an expungement and sealing summit on Oct. 18 at Community Temple Church of God in Christ (COGIC) in Jacksonville.

Criminal records create a stigma that can be hard to overcome. According to the Center for American Progress, “Nine in 10 employers, 4 in 5 landlords, and 3 in 5 colleges and universities now use background checks to screen out applicants with criminal records.”

Volunteer attorneys at the summit processed for expungement and/or sealed 204 total records. Expungement erases a legal record of an arrest, court supervision or certain probations from an individual’s criminal record. Sealing prevents businesses and other entities from accessing a person’s criminal record without a warrant. The process can be complex, daunting, long and expensive, which is why community clinics offering assistance are so meaningful.

One story that stood out at this year’s event involved a local U.S. Army veteran navigating a lingering, prohibitive legal complication. Although he was employed, his work in agriculture was seasonal and hardly sufficient to cover the expenses of raising his five children. His dream of getting a job with the state alongside his mother became more of a reality after volunteers filed an expungement of his decade-old misdemeanor record.

Shumaker Wins Court Order to Keep College of Charleston Basketball Player on the Court

November 20, 2025

CHARLESTON, SCShumaker Law Firm has secured a temporary restraining order against the NCAA on behalf of College of Charleston basketball player Connor Hickman, ensuring the graduate-student guard can return to the court while his eligibility case proceeds.

The order, granted Tuesday in Charleston County, allows Hickman to compete immediately as the court reviews his ongoing petition for an additional year of eligibility. Hickman, who transferred from the University of Cincinnati earlier this year, has been awaiting a ruling on a medical hardship waiver stemming from a significant foot injury that was misdiagnosed and improperly managed during the 2023–2024 season.

Shumaker’s Hospitality, Leisure & Sports Industry Sector led the case, with attorneys Bennett Speyer, Diana Florence, Bob Boland, and Mark Peper of the Peper Law Firm in Charleston, SC, working in collaboration. Together, the team argued that Hickman’s injury, the delayed diagnosis, and the lack of timely surgical intervention deprived him of a fair opportunity to preserve a year of eligibility.

With basketball season already underway and the Cougars managing multiple injuries, the ruling brings immediate relief for the program. Hickman is expected to suit up as the team opens play at the Paradise Jam tournament this week.

A virtual hearing is scheduled for December 8, when the judge will review the full case and determine whether Hickman will be granted the additional season of eligibility.
