Former U.S. Bank Associate General Counsel Jeffrey Shea Joins Best & Flanagan

Minneapolis law firm Best & Flanagan LLP has announced that attorney Jeff Shea, former Associate General Counsel at U.S. Bank, has joined the firm’s Real Estate practice group. Shea will represent clients in all facets of real estate – owners, users, investors and developers – working with them on a variety of issues including development and redevelopment of commercial real estate, purchase and sale of real estate, land use, and retail and office leasing.

“With his long-time in-house experience counseling the corporate real estate department of one of the largest banks in the United States, Jeff brings a valuable blend of legal and business expertise that will be key to our clients’ success,” said Sarah Crippen, managing partner at Best & Flanagan. “Jeff is an exceptional negotiator of complex real estate transactions, and will be an engaging and smart addition to our real estate team.”

Shea has worked in corporate real estate law for more than 25 years, more than 18 years of which was in the Legal Department of U.S. Bank. There he served as senior vice president and associate general counsel, providing legal counsel to the Corporate Real Estate Department regarding all property owned or leased by the bank, a portfolio totaling more than 3,400 locations across the country. He worked with corporate real estate leadership on strategic decisions regarding sale, purchase and leasing of the bank’s property assets, including major transactions in Los Angeles, Nashville, Portland, Ore., and, locally, the purchase of the outstanding 51% partnership that owned the U.S. Bank Plaza in downtown Minneapolis, resulting in U.S. Bank being the sole owner of the property.

Most recently, in Milwaukee, he sold a parcel of land adjacent to U.S. Bank’s office tower to Westin Hotel and worked with the hotel to integrate it into the city and into the bank’s campus. The hotel has just opened this summer. In Minneapolis, he worked to redevelop the bank’s retail site in the St. Anthony Main neighborhood to “right-size” the branch and sell the remaining part of the property to Mortenson for an apartment building now in the process of being developed.

“I am excited to join Best & Flanagan and take the experience I’ve gained over the past two decades at the bank and use it to help clients navigate the changing landscape and their changing real estate needs,” said Shea.

Prior to joining U.S. Bank, Shea was the director of corporate real estate and airport affairs for Northwest Airlines, where he managed all of Northwest’s domestic off-airport real estate holdings and all Canadian and Caribbean airport facilities. Before that, he was a real estate attorney for the law firm of Ice Miller Donadio & Ryan in Indianapolis, Ind.

Shea earned his B.S.B. in management with an emphasis in finance from the University of Minnesota, and his J.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Law in Nashville, Tenn. He is active in the community through his volunteer work with the Volunteer Lawyer’s Network and with Nativity of Our Lord School in St. Paul’s Mac Groveland neighborhood.
