MIAMI, FL—Aronfeld Trial Lawyers has obtained a significant legal victory for its client, Diana Sanders, a nurse from Northern California, after a weeklong jury trial in Federal court against Carnival Cruise Line.
On January 5, 2024, Diana Sanders was a passenger aboard the Carnival Radiance that departed out of Los Angeles, California. During an approximately eight-hour period, she was over-served and consumed roughly 15 shots of tequila. Despite her visibly intoxicated condition, she continued to be served alcohol. As a result of this over-service, she became severely impaired, blacked out, and sustained damages by falling down the stairs.
Diana Sanders is a Registered Nurse in Northern California; she is a mother, a grandmother, and has two siblings. After a frustrating experience with the cruise line’s lack of transparency and conflicting information, Diana pursued legal action. Despite facing a corporate giant and two years of litigation, a Miami jury of eight women ruled in her favor after five days of deliberation.
The jury returned the following $300,000.00 verdict. Carnival was negligent- by virtue of its bartenders’ overserving alcohol to Plaintiff Diana Sanders- and that such negligence was a legal cause of physical injury and emotional damage.

DENVER, CO—A Cook County jury has returned a verdict of $70 million including $17 million in punitive damages against Abbott Laboratories, the manufacturer of the cow’s milk-based infant feeding product Similac. The jury found that Abbott’s product caused four premature infants to develop necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)—a crippling and often fatal intestinal disease.
NEC involves the bacterial invasion of a newborn’s intestinal lining, leading to severe inflammation, tissue necrosis, and potential intestinal perforation. The disease often requires surgery and carries a high mortality rate.
Attorneys at Denver-based Olson Grimsley represent four families whose children suffered devastating and lifelong complications from NEC after being fed Abbott’s product while in the neonatal intensive care unit. They argued that Abbott knew its product greatly increases the risk of NEC for premature infants, yet falsely promoted their products as safe.
The Olson Grimsley trial team included partners Kenzo Kawanabe, Sean Grimsley, Abigail Hinchcliff, and Samara Hoose. Beth Costner and Nicole Hollingsworth were also members of the trial team. Olson Grimsley tried the case with Ben Whiting, Amelia Frenkel, Jamie Price, and Laura Shannon from Keller Postman, LLC.

SACRAMENTO, CA—Buchalter achieved a landmark victory on behalf of Placer County Water Agency (PCWA) and the Middle Fork Project Finance Authority (MFPFA) in the Mosquito Fire litigation against Pacific Gas and Electric Company, concluding nearly four years of hard fought litigation. The settlement represents the largest recovery in Placer County history and stands among the most significant outcomes in California wildfire litigation.
The agreement delivers $80 million to PCWA, which PCWA will then transfer to the MFPFA. The MFPFA is a joint powers authority responsible for budgeting and administering funds for the maintenance and operation of the Project. The settlement agreement also requires PG&E to fund wildfire protection and safety infrastructure for the Middle Fork Project, and provides full defense and indemnity for PCWA against all third party claims, including governmental fines and penalties—ensuring PCWA pays nothing. PG&E will also dismiss its cross-complaint against PCWA, which alleged PCWA was responsible for the Mosquito Fire.
The result reflects a dominant performance by a Buchalter litigation team led by Kevin Collins and Brandon Carr. The team also had critical energy leadership from Gwenn O’Hara and support from attorneys Lisa Pleau Fuller and Adam Smith. The outcome was driven by a deep, coordinated effort across the firm, supported by an exceptional broader team whose work secured the result for the client.
This historic settlement underscores the strength of Buchalter’s Wildfire Task Force, a specialized team with extensive experience representing public entities and businesses in complex wildfire litigation against major California utilities. Drawing on deep knowledge of utility operations, regulatory frameworks, and technical fire cause issues, the team works to maximize recovery while allowing clients to focus on rebuilding and moving forward.
